Areté
The pursuit of excellence in all things — the highest version of what something can be. Not perfection, but the relentless commitment to becoming better than you were yesterday.
Why we’re called Areté
Areté describes the relentless pursuit of one’s highest potential. Not perfection, but the commitment to becoming better than you were yesterday. A student who studied not just to pass, but to understand something deeply enough to teach it.
The MCAT demands exactly that. It doesn’t just test what you’ve memorized — it tests whether you can think clearly under pressure, reason through complexity, and push past the moment where most people give up.
Areté isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about refusing to leave potential on the table.
That’s the standard I hold myself to — and it’s the standard I’ll hold you to. Not because I expect perfection, but because I know what you’re capable of when someone shows you the path and walks it with you.
What areté looks like in practice
Depth Over Speed
We don’t rush through content to check a box. Real understanding takes time, and that’s where the score jumps come from.
Honesty First
Real improvement will not come from false encouragement. I tell you exactly what’s working and where you need to work harder, giving you a clear picture of where you stand and what needs to change.
Your Path, Not Ours
No two students learn the same way. Every plan is built around how you think, what you struggle with, and what your life actually looks like.
A note from Owen
I love teaching. That’s the honest truth behind all of this. There’s nothing quite like the moment when a concept finally clicks for a student — when something that felt impossible an hour ago suddenly makes sense.
I started Areté because I want to help people become doctors. Not in some abstract, business-plan kind of way — I mean I genuinely want to see you get into medical school. I want to be the person who helped you get there. I want us to be colleagues one day.
